A lot of my friends in the healthcare profession have been going through some hard times recently. This is a part of our job, and the hard times range from an exhausting few hours or a tough day to absolute heartbreak.
We are so privileged to be with people on this journey, and to be a part of some of the most vulnerable and heartbreaking moments in their lives. It is such a special thing to provide love and support to people, and make the worst day of their lives just that little bit better. This is why we do what we do.
Healthcare is like that, you will have a run of days where you feel completely inadequate, exhausted, have absolutely no faith in yourself and feel like everything is completely out of your control and going wrong. Then, just as you’re about to give up…something magical happens. It might be sincere thanks from a patient, it might be a compliment, it could even be that you are there for someone when they need it. This is what makes it all worthwhile. The lack of sleep, the stress, the feelings of being unappreciated, the heartache. Practising without judgement can be so difficult, but it so special to gain an understanding and insight into people’s lives and know that you helped to make the difficult times just that little bit easier.
To everyone who is going through a tough time lately, please look after yourself. Drink a glass (or three) of wine, go for a walk outside, sit and watch the sunset and tell the people around you how much they mean to you. Reach out if you need support or if you are struggling. And remember how much a privilege your job is, even if it is absolutely fucked sometimes.
Sending light and love X
